TRUTH TEAM 2012 tweeted this today: Today in Missouri, Romney said: “Planned Parenthood, we’re going to get rid of that.”

Why would a presumably sane Republican candidate for President threaten the availability of family planning for women voters? There must be a compelling reason. Here’s one possibility.

In 2005, fertility rates for Hispanic women were over 45 percent higher than those for non-Hispanic black women and Asian women (99 births per 1,000 for Hispanic women versus 67 births per 1,000 for non-Hispanic black and Asian women), and more than 65 percent higher than those for Native American women and non-Hispanic white women (60 and 58 births per 1,000 women, respectively).

All indications are that this trend has continued since 2005, and perhaps become more pronounced. In 2009, the statistics for lifetime births among American women broke down by ancestry this way:

  • Hispanic — 2.73
  • African-American — 2.03
  • Asian — 1.96
  • White — 1.78

As of one minute after midnight on 20 September 2011, gays and lesbians are no longer discriminated against by the United States military. The us joins 42 other progressive nations that allow gays to serve, including Israel, Japan, Russia (!), and almost all of Europe.

In most of the United States, gays and lesbians are still second-class citizens. We can marry in only six states. Employers can legally fire people for being gay. There is still a long way to go.

But the end of DADT is an important event in ending discrimination against LGBT people. We have President Obama to thank for this, and we owe him our continued support.

Russian immigrant to US Isaac Asimov

I am continually being surprised by the President.

Isaac Asimov was among those cited in Obama’s immigration policy speech as examples of immigrants who “have helped make this country strong and prosperous”. The President said:

“We can point to the genius of Einstein, the designs of I. M. Pei, the stories of Isaac Asimov, the entire industries that were forged by Andrew Carnegie.”

President Barack Obama

Asimov would doubtless have been pleased to be mentioned by the President in the same breath as Einstein. I am very pleased to learn that Obama very possibly has read some of Asimov’s stories.
