Dr. Megan Hunt stands next to a body in the woods in tennis shoes

Dana Delany - why she wears heels

I have complained previously on this blog that Dr. Megan Hunt (Dana Delany) is the only doctor I have ever seen who wears high heels to work. I understand the show’s need to show off Delany’s legs, but a bit of realism is appreciated.

Finally, in the most recent episode, she wears tennis shoes.

The next constructive move for BODY OF PROOF would be to have Dr. Brumfield deal with his weight problem before he has a heart attack.

Body of Proof has been renewed for a second season. If the most recent episode is any indicator, it might last as long as Quincy did (148 episodes).

Dr. Megan Hunt (Dana Delany)

Quincy M.E. (Jack Klugman)

All the bugs have been worked out of the show. Not one of her associates said a ridiculously stupid line in this latest episode, nor did any of them consult Dr. Hunt about stuff they should have known themselves. And they even gave Seven of Nine something to do besides being an ineffective boss. She gets to sleep with Dr. Hunt’s ex.

But, like Quincy was really the Jack Klugman show, this is really the Dana Delany hour. The regular supporting cast are quite unimportant. How many remember Robert Ito, John Raquin, Joseph Roman, or Gary Walberg? They were the supporting cast on Quincy M.E.

NOTE: Body of Proof is set in Philadelphia, but is filmed in Providence, RI.

Dana Delany and Timothy Hutton in MULTIPLE SARCASMS

You see, in 2008 there was this very interesting film SYNECDOCHE, NY, that dealt with a somewhat overreaching playwright and his midlife crisis. It was very good, very long, and not very commercial. It seems that MULTIPLE SARCASMS, the new film starring Dana Delany, Mira Sorvino and Timothy Hutton, has taken Charles Kaufman’s synecdoche idea, added a conventional storyline which is a bit more upbeat, and plugged in some actors with name recognition in an effort to make the story palatable to an American audience.

It seems like that, but according to the credits, MULTIPLE SARCASMS was written by Linda Morris and Brooks Branch. There is no evidence that either of them ever actually saw SYNECDOCHE, NY.

This film was not a bad way to spend a Saturday morning, and it is on Netflix.

Mira Sorvino and Hutton in MULTIPLE SARCASMS

That being said, Sorvino is great, and Delany has the thankless task of portraying an extremely irritating character, which she does well. Timothy Hutton’s performance is greatly improved by his being surrounded by such talent.

Mira Sorvino, who among other things was Sophia Eva McCormick DeCastro in Swans Crossing in 1992, amazingly enough, does not have a website (or at least none that I can find).

Carolyn McCormick as Minuet

The guest star (one of them anyway) this week was Carolyn McCormick, whom you may remember was Minuet on STAR TREK:THE NEXT GENERATION. She was also Assistant D.A. Rita Fiore on SPENSER FOR HIRE.

So the other doctors got their own plotline in this one. That’s good. It makes them more believable characters if they occasionally do things without Dr. Meagan Hunt (Dana Delany). Still, why they had to refer to Hunt’s encyclopedic medical knowledge to solve their little mystery instead of, I don’t know, looking stuff up at a library, I am not sure.

This episode is loaded with information about surgical procedures and deep vein thrombosis, so it is not a waste of time. And we learn from Dr. Brumfield (Windell Middlebrooks) that a two month wait is required before a doctor can ethically date an ex-patient.

Dana Delany sometimes wears glasses in her role as Dr. Meagan Hunt

Which brings me to what really bothers me about this show. I have been to a few doctors in the course of my existence, and none of them have been obese. There is a good reason for that. Doctors know better. House said it pretty well when he pointed out that “there are no elderly obese people” (I paraphrase a bit, but the sense is the same). And then there is the matter of Dr. Hunt’s shoes.

Have you ever seen a doctor go to work in heels? Again, doctors know better. They tend to wear shoes, at least at work, that are good for their feet. I have never noticed wither Dr. Maura Isles (Sasha Alexander) in RIZZOLI AND ISLES wears heels, and that is probably because the show does not usually include closeups of her legs.

But it was nice to see Minuet again. And it was a very good mystery.

BIT OF TRIVIA: Dana Delany was in a car accident involving a bus just before shooting the pilot for BODY OF PROOF, and broke two fingers. The bus driver reportedly asked for her autograph.
