The message below is from Geri and Cindy of Brooklyn, New York and was sent out by the organization FREEDOM TO MARRY.
I thought I’d pass it along. It sounds like a really good idea.

“In two weeks, same-sex couples will finally be able to marry in New York. The two of us will tie the knot in our Brooklyn neighborhood, surrounded by family and friends.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 19 years since we first met and, like most couples, we’ve been through joys and sorrows. Most importantly, we’ve been able to go through them all together. We’re overjoyed to be able to say “I Do” and our kids are thrilled that their parents will “really” be married just like the parents of their friends at school.

After nearly 20 years together, one thing’s for sure: We don’t need toasters, gravy boats, or blenders as gifts. Instead, we’re asking friends and family to give a gift that’s much more meaningful — the gift of equality.

We’re signing up for Freedom to Marry’s Wedding Registry because we support Freedom to Marry’s leadership in winning more states, building public support, and repealing the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act.

If you’re getting married and are in a similar situation as we are — lots of love and lots of stuff — sign up for a meaningful way for your friends and family to honor your wedding.

When you join the Wedding Registry, you’ll get a page of your own where you can post a photo and share your story. Your friends and family will be able to make donations to Freedom to Marry in your honor. It only takes a couple of minutes to set up your profile.

Together, we can help ensure that Freedom to Marry has the resources needed to help couples across the country legally marry in the states where they live.”

This is a quote from New York State Senator Roy McDonald on why he voted to legalize gay marriage in his state. We need more of this sort of thinking and more people like Senator McDonald.

“You get to the point where you evolve in your life where everything isn’t black and white, good and bad, and you try to do the right thing. You might not like that. You might be very cynical about that. Well, fuck it, I don’t care what you think. I’m trying to do the right thing.

“I’m tired of Republican-Democrat politics. They can take the job and shove it. I come from a blue-collar background. I’m trying to do the right thing, and that’s where I’m going with this.”

A memo from the Chief of Navy Chaplains regarding the effects of ending the ban on gays in the U.S. military, said that Chaplains will receive training in conducting same-sex civil unions and “If the base is located in a state where same-sex marriage is legal, then base facilities may normally be used to celebrate the marriage.”

Obviously, there will be lawsuits from the right, but they will be without success as long as the ceremonies are called civil unions. This is good news.
