Lucy Staniland (right) and Nikola McMurtry are NIXIE IN THE POND - new UK folk duo

I don’t know much about NIXIE IN THE POND. The folk duo is made up of Lucy Staniland, and Nikola McMurtry, who are both on Twitter, though McMurtry doesn’t tweet much. Their Facebook Page biography goes this way:

Started out as friends who just happened to write our own material, then one night we began jamming together and then BOOM. We now out stay our welcome in each others pockets all the time. – We love all kinds of music, but we’ve a particular crush on folk, so we seem to be heading down the ‘folky’ path with a bit of our own stamp.

I had to listen to them a couple of times before I decided they were good, but they are, and I suspect they’ll be around a while.

Nixie in the Pond is a Germanic Folk tale popularized by the Brothers Grimm. A nixie is a water spirit.

Fiona Apple 2012

Fiona's new album THE IDLER WHEEL, etc

Fiona Apple‘s second album, released in 1999, set a record for length of title. Here is it’s complete title:

When the pawn hits the conflicts he thinks like a king
What he knows throws the blows when he goes to the fight
And he’ll win the whole thing ‘fore he enters the ring
There’s no body to batter when your mind is your might
So when you go solo, you hold your own hand
And remember that depth is the greatest of heights
And if you know where you stand, then you know where to land
And if you fall it won’t matter, cause you’ll know that you’re right

The new album, due out 18 June is called:

Fiona Apple at SXSW in 2012

The idler wheel is wiser
than the driver of the screw
And whipping cords will serve you more
Than words will ever do

I’m definitely buying that album.
