Soko holding her new CD 'I THOUGHT I WAS AN ALIEN'

The vinyl version of I THOUGHT I WAS AN ALIEN includes the CD

The long anticipated album by Soko (Stéphanie Sokolinski), I THOUGHT I WAS AN ALIEN will be released in France on vinyl and CD on 20 February. In the United States and possibly Canada it will be on iTunes for $10.99. (It can now be pre-ordered.) There is a disclaimer on iTunes that reads as follows:

Please note: the pre-order contents listed here are subject to change without notice and the final product received may differ.

The week before the official French release, it can be streamed online. So I got to listen. There are some brilliant lyrics on this record. Here is an example. Track #11 is titled Destruction of the Disgusting Ugly Hate. There is, as yet, no video for this song. The lyrics are below.

Soko on the cover of Eurostar's Metropolitan magazine

"scars on my heart
can’t you see
what have you done to me
scars on me arms can’t you see
where i am sinking

destruction of the disgusting ugly hate

i got a tattoo on my heart
your name is written in black
you have tattoos everywhere
but my name is not there

destruction of the disgusting ugly hate

i got tears on my cheeks
rolling faster than a rocketship
you stair at me
you do nothing
now burning man please wake up and burn me

destruction of the disgusting ugly hate

and now you’re leaving
but can’t you see
what have you done to me?
you’re leaving me but can’t you see
where i am sinking

destruction of the disgusting ugly hate"

Léa Seydoux

Louis Garrel

Two things that the French do better than anyone else are food and films. Perhaps the easiest way to enjoy French cinema this year is to attend the 2nd ONLINE FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL, which is happening now through the 1st of February. Ten feature films and ten shorts are in competition. Viewers are invited to score all the films and leave comments on the website. Films with the highest scores will receive awards and be shown on all Air France flights.

I will watch them all.

The short I am most looking forward to is PETIT TAILLEUR, directed by actor Louis Garrel (THE DREAMERS, LA BELLE PERSONNE). The most interesting feature seems to be BELLE ÉPINE, directed by Rebecca Zlotowski. Both of these star Léa Seydoux, who got her start in MES COPINES with Soko, and was Gabrielle in MIDNIGHT IN PARIS.

NOTE: I was somewhat disappointed to see that the new Virginie Despentes film BYE BYE BLONDIE which is due to be released on 21 March in Europe, is not included in the festival. It did open the CHÉRIS CHÉRIS festival in Paris last year.

The festival is available in 14 languages: English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Lithuanian, Portuguese, Polish, Russian and Spanish. The Korean and Chinese versions are available on KT and Youku, respectively.

Features rent for €1.99. Shorts for €0.99. Full access pack is €29.99. That makes this the cheapest film festival in the world.
